Marketing Matters: World Asthma Day Through a Healthcare Marketer's Lens

In celebration of World Asthma Day 2025, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) has chosen the theme “Make Inhaled Treatments Accessible for ALL”.

As someone working in healthcare marketing, I’ve gained valuable insights into the importance of patient education in managing diseases, especially chronic conditions like asthma.

My journey with asthma has not only shed light on the significance of self-care and preventative measures but also on the pivotal role that healthcare marketing plays in empowering patients.

When a doctor once mentioned, “Your asthma can change, and you’re always going to live with this disease,” the impact of the words was daunting.

Why? Why would my asthma change after 23 years? Why was I now at the doctor’s office because I had my first asthma attack in 23 years? And why so cold and matter-of-fact?

The Power of Reframing Messages

What if messages like that were reframed to promote a positive mindset and encourage patients to view their condition as an opportunity for self-care and proactive measures, rather than a limitation?

By educating individuals about asthma and advocating for preventative strategies, we can empower them to prioritize their well-being and lead fulfilling lives.

There’s no escaping that asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects over 260 million people globally. It causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing.

But it’s also responsible for over 450,000 deaths each year.

Most of these deaths are preventable – especially through access to inhaled medications that are essential for controlling the underlying disease and treating attacks.

The Purpose of This Year’s Theme

Doctors and health professionals are called upon to ensure that every person with asthma is prescribed evidence-based, essential, inhaled corticosteroid-containing medication in addition to (or in combination with) reliever medication, to prevent avoidable morbidity and mortality from asthma.

In low-middle-income countries, lack of availability or high cost of inhaled medicines – especially inhaled corticosteroid-containing inhalers – contributes to the fact that 96% of global asthma deaths occur in these countries

Even in high-income countries, high costs can mean that many people with asthma have limited access to essential inhaled medicines, resulting in preventable asthma deaths.

World Asthma Day

In light of these statistics, it is clear that advocating for accessible inhaled treatments and educating individuals about preventative strategies is crucial in asthma management. Furthermore, monitoring lung function is essential for optimizing treatment and preventing asthma exacerbations. These tests not only empower individuals with asthma to actively manage their condition by making informed decisions about their treatment and lifestyle, but also enable healthcare providers to intervene proactively to prevent asthma attacks and complications.

If you have asthma, talk to your healthcare provider about incorporating regular lung function tests into your asthma management plan to breathe easier and lead a healthier life. Your lungs will thank you for it!

A Marketer’s Perspective

Our founder, Heidi’s takeaway from her asthma journey:

“Taking a proactive approach to my well-being means prioritizing my health and making a plan to stay on top of it. I’ve had my annual lung function test and set an apponitment for 2026. When it comes to healthcare marketing, I believe in focusing on the 'why' and 'how' of education and prevention. For me, it's all about keeping my asthma under control and making sure my lungs are as strong as they can be."

If you have asthma, this might be a reminder to check in with your own care plan.

And if you’re working in healthcare, how are you making your message easier for patients to hear, understand, and act on?

This year’s theme hits close to home.
